First BRA Day (Breast Reconstruction Awareness) in Belgium on 17 October
More and better information about reconstruction after breast cancer

19 September 2012

Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most frequent type of cancer in women. In Belgium, 1 in 8 women run the risk of getting breast cancer during her life and annually over 9000 Belgian women are diagnosed with breast cancer.

For these reasons more and more women are confronted with the question of having a breast reconstruction or not after a part or complete mastectomy.
What choices do they have, what are the possibilities offered in their specific situation and where can they find the right information?

These are the questions a group of Canadian surgeons and paramedics from various disciplines in the field of breast cancer wanted to answer. BRA Day was their brainchild. “BRA” stands for Breast Reconstruction Awareness and also for bra. The first BRA Day took place in Canada in October 2011. This initiative was soon followed, and this year BRA Days will also be organised on 17 October in the US, Finland, Ireland, Australia and other countries.

Bra Day in Belgium

Belgium will also have its first BRA Day. It is an initiative from the BEAUTIFUL ABC Foundation www.beautifulabc.com, a non-profit organisation founded by Professor Phillip Blondeel (UZ Gent) and Annette Porter in collaboration with surgeons, ex-patients and enthusiastic supporters from various European countries. The foundation’s purpose is to disseminate the right information and to provide complete information on breast reconstruction to enable patients to make the right choice regarding having breast reconstruction or not, as this is an integral part of the healing process.

Flemish celebs support BRA Day
