BRA Day Belgium-Brugge: patient and partner academies

Wednesday 16 October 2013

Attention: REGISTRATION REQUIRED

Aim

Patient academy

In a closed session of maximum 25 participants, women will be given the opportunity to talk and share experiences amongst themselves. About one third of the group (women who have undergone breast conservative surgery or mastectomy, with or without breast reconstruction) will share testimonies, experiences and feelings with ex-breast cancer patients contemplating breast reconstruction or with women who have just been diagnosed with breast cancer. The round table discussion is guided by a plastic surgeon. No ex-cathedra presentations. Women are allowed but never forced to show their breast reconstruction result to the group. Intimacy and discretion are key in this session.

Only open to women.

Partner academy

A partner can be anybody from within the inner circle of a (ex-) patient. This can be husband, sibling, neighbor, … the patient decides who she wishes to bring along.

Partner academies take place at the same time as the patient academies. The goal is to inform and coach partners on what is going on with their loved one in a closed session of maximum 25 persons. Persons that have already lived the experience share their story, testimony and feelings with partners who are presently facing the difficult situation of their partner. Simple aspects of life as emotions, fears, sexuality, matrimony, relationships with their loved one’s, etc… that now are challenged will be addressed and discussed. The process is guided by a psychologist. No ex-cathedra presentations. Intimacy and discretion are key in these sessions.

Only open to partners of (ex-)breast cancer patients. One partner per patient.

Target audience

  • Patient academies: former breast cancer patients with or without breast reconstruction, women presently confronted with breast cancer
  • Partner academies: partners of (ex-)breast cancer patients. A partner can be anybody from within the inner circle of a (ex-) patient. This can be husband, sibling, neighbor, partner, friend ...
